Subject: AB 7 - Bat Bill

We also seem to be making POSSIBLE progress on AB 7, the “bat bill.” We met with Assemblyman Huffman last week and he MAYBE willing to amend his bill. His bill would prohibit non-wood bats for the 2011 season. As you may also recall, NEW NFHS aluminum bat standards come into effect in 2012 – all aluminum bats must meet the new BBCOR standard (NCAA colleges have to meet the BBCOR standard in 2011). Presently his bill would BAN ALL NON-WOOD BATS for next year meaning school would have to have WOOD BATS in the spring of 2011 and could then use the new aluminum BBCOR bats in 2012. It appears that they are willing to compromise if CIF moves up the aluminum BBCOR date from 2012 to 2011. While the NFHS is keeping with 2012 implementation date, CIF moving to implementation a year earlier would certainly save everyone from having to buy wood bats for one year.

So, if you are buying any bats for next year I would strongly urge you to 1) wait a month until we see what shakes out or if you are buying aluminum bats be sure they meet the NEW BBCOR standards as those standards maybe the mandate for 2011 instead of waiting for 2012. Again, we will keep you posted.
