S.B. 107, the CIF
reauthorization bill
Yesterday Governor Jerry Brown signed into
law S.B. 107, the CIF reauthorization bill.
With the signing of the bill the CIF will continue to govern high
school sports for the next five (5) years through 2017. As you may
recall, the bill started with a 10 year reauthorization but the
bill was amended by the Assembly Appropriations Committee in July
from a 10 to a 5 year reauthorization. The very good news is that
our bill went through each committee on the consent calendar and
there was no listed opposition to the CIF continuing in this
leadership role.
We would like to thank all of you, the ten section commissioners
and their office staffs and the 500+ CIF member schools who took
the time and made the effort to meet with their local legislators
and wrote letters of support. This overwhelming show of support
helped make this process as smooth as we have had in the past
decade in working with our State Legislators in Sacramento.
We also owe deep gratitude and thanks to State Senator Curran
Price (Senate District 26 Los Angeles) who carried our
reauthorization forward through what can often be a challenging
legislative process. Senator Price played baseball at Inglewood
High School and he took personal pride in what the CIF stands for
and what all of you do and contribute to the education of young
people. He and his staff (several of which also played sports at
CIF member schools) took pleasure in representing education based
athletics.
Lastly, the CIF would not be able to accomplish what we do
legislatively without the expertise of Nancy LaCasse, School
Services of California, who serves as our lobbyist in Sacramento.
This is the fourth time that Nancy has successfully guided our
reauthorization process through the Capitol. Her efforts on our
behalf and the 800,000 student-athletes and 1,515 member schools
is immeasurable and we are truly grateful for her leadership and
contribution to this process.
